I was part of a transport this morning for Solomon, a German Shepherd. I was a little reluctant to volunteer at first since he was listed as a "runner" and I'm not used to handling big dogs, but I figured I would suck it up and just be extra cautious when moving him from vehicle to vehicle. I didn't lose him, but after dropping him off I got sad and about halfway home I realized why - I missed him. I had him for only 40 minutes and I missed him! So I have to ask: is it just me? Or do other people get attached to the dogs that they transport and will never see again? I'm not really a big dog person, but he was just the sweetest big galoot, from the second that he got out of the first transporter's car through to the second that he got in the next person's car, he was just a big lovely suck. As I drove away, he was busy licking the next person's head from his seat in the back! It's not the first time that I have felt sad after transporting a dog - there was one dauchund that was just such a snuggler it was hard to hand him off ( ) and there were two jack russels that were so skinny I just had to wonder what their previous lives were like ( ), but often I just feel happy to have been able to help.

I'm with you. Some of them really get to you just in the short time you have them...it's only natural to think that way. I usually console myself by knowing that they are saved and on the road to a better place.

I am the exactly the same way as you! I usually do the London Guelph run, which I also did this morning, another Shepperd, Cocker Sp. and a Beagle. These little faces embed into my brain. I remember each one of them. I think of them often, especially ones that you get that certain pull to, I used to get all choked up whenI'd pass them on, I stil do at times, but it's gotten easier for me. Knowing they're going to a better place makes me feel so much better. I love getting updates!! I have the Shepperd at my house for a night or 2, Elliott thinks he's died and gone to heaven! He so wants to be a big dog!! This is good for me knowing how my gang react to having someone in thier house using their beds, toys etc. So far so good! Maybe that fostering thing is just around the corner for me!

I cried reading your post how is that for being a suck. I transported a neighbours dog and brought her to Blanche I cried before and after I droped her off if she was house trained I would have kept her in a second. It hurts but you are all doing a great job.

Yep, I get that way too. I'm not so bad any more ... most of the time ... although there are some that still tug at my heartstrings. I had a little sheltie not to long ago that I almost detoured to Trenton instead of Port Hope. The hardest ones for me are the ones that have so obviously been abused. Now they really make my heart melt. The absolute worst was a little JRT called Raleigh who I picked up from an abusive family (they didn't even say goodbye to him) and drove southbound to Toronto. The foster family ended up keeping him and the owner kept in touch with updates for quite a while. He'll be in my book some day.

DEFINITELY! I get attached (some more than others!) to my transports. I've been lucky with a few that the foster homes have sent me pictures of how they are making out. I had one hound that made a huge impression on me when I took her to the foster home in North Bay. A few months later I had the priviledge of transporting her to her adoptive home in Guelph and she was a totally different dog - the spark had returned to her eyes.

I just had Jaid a 7 year old Sheppard for approx 30 hrs. She won us both over! My husband can't stop thinking of her. She is such a beautiful girl. She quite liked it here too! I took her to the Pugalug in Cambridge, she was very good. I don't know how you guys that keep them for weeks and months cope. I would be a mess. I'd turn into a stalker! I'd want pictures stories probably daily! I keep thinking I want to foster, but I don't know if I have it in me. I get way to attatched. I guees the only way I'll know is if I just do it. I can do it, I can do it, I can do it....

I know how you feel! I did a transport on Saturday for Kendall a 7 year old shepperd mix that had a HUGE tumor hanging from her belly and ears that were so badly infected she would yelp if you touched her head [/i]

My husband and I just did our first transport today. It was for a 2 year old female lab mix with no name. We fell in love with her right away, apparently all the transporters did. We felt good about bringing her to a good place but so sad that in 2 years no one even named her. Anyways, when we dropped her off Loarraine asked if we had a name for her. Her name is Mabel, and whoever gets her is very lucky she was a VERY kind dog. Anyone who can should try to do a transport, its such a nice way to help and you meet very nice people.

She's a wonderful person and a tremendous canine advocate.

Every step is an important one, to help these dogs in need. You are all unsung heros, doing good for these babies and expecting nothing more than knowing they are going on to better lives. Rescue people are the best!
