We are coming into Skunk season or i should say we are there <img src="/forums/Smileys/phpbb3/icon_smile.gif" alt="Smiley" title="Smile" />
Here is something I found in a flyer and thought i would pass on!

Compiled by David Bates
~Your Pet's Pantry, London ON~

Has your pet been skunked (sprayed by a skunk)?? The 'old'
remedy of using tomato juice is ineffective - it doesn't remove the odour and it's discolours your pet. Here's a home *remedy to try which won't leave your pet smelling like 'skunky' tomato juice:

~ 1 quart (litre) of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2).
**Use a fresh (unopened) bottle because, once opened, Hydrogen Peroxide loses its strength and turns into water (H2O)
~ 1/4 cup (50ml) baking soda
~ 1 tsp. (5 ml) liquid soap  ( Lori's suggestion: use Dawn dishsoap with a citrus base)
~ 1 pr. plastic or latex gloves

Combine the ingredients in an open container (do not store in a sealed bottle - it will EXPLODE)
Using gloves, wash your pet with lukewarm water and the mixture well
into the fur. Be sure to concentrate on the area that was sprayed.

KEEP MIXTURE AWAY FROM YOUR PET'S FACE AND EYES (it's a harsh solution).

If your pet has been sprayed in the face, try Tricotine Liquid Douche Concentrate or any over-the-counter-douche.

Let the mixture remain in the coat for about 10 min's or so beofre rinsing out.
Rinse your pet with lukewarm tap water. Don't allow the mixture into your pet's eyes. (use a wash cloth to cover the eyes if you are rinsing the head)
After bathing, check your pet's eyes. If they are red and watering, your pet may have taken a direct hit in the face by the skunk spray.
It won't blind your pet, but it's very painful so contact your Vet.
A modern and effective approach to eliminating skunk odour is the citrus cleaner Orange aPEEL (tm) - made from oil of the skins and seeds of an orange.
Used by Veterinarians across Canada, this all natural cleaner is versatile for a variety of applications.

As a quick first attempt:  Irish Spring soap works.  Original scent.

We had an idiot dog who always wanted to play with the stripy kitties.

I also had a groomer friend that swore by toothpaste.

Just as an aside, d-limonene (the active ingredient in citrus based cleaners and in orange-apeel) is a very harsh chemical, and can cause skin irritation.  In high concentrations, it can be used to strip paint.

Also, Febreze won't work.   :D

Thanks Lizz, all very good ideas Smiley
I've used it on both boys with good success and no irritations thus far!

***Also, Dawn is recommended if there is any indication of fleas   strippy kitties Wink

I had a dog (my border collie cross, Scout) who also loved the striped kitties.  So I've used virtually every product known to man for skunk smells.
I will say that toothpaste, while effective, takes a LOT of toothpaste and is brutal to get out of fur.
And the most common place for a dog to get sprayed is in the face so you need something that you can put on their faces.
I have found pickling vinegar is pretty effective.  It's stronger than regular white vinegar and is safe for faces.

Hmmm,
never thought of "pickling" vinegar but that sounds like a good
suggestion too.

I use regular vinegar in the boys bath, just to get rid of any
hidden soap spots that I have missed; whilst chasing a"pug round the tub" Wink

I used the hydrogen peroxide mixture to bathe all 3 of them (just in case) and then used some water and vinegar on Piper's face.  She was definitely the one who got hit because she was foaming and rubbing her face into everything afterwards, but her eyes look ok.  The smell is still present a bit but it'll fade, I'm sure.  What a morning!

okay my turn Lisa!!!

LOL! Abi nailed a skunk last nite and I mean literally!
She chased it down the street and I got her back from initial contact; then
the little "striped twat" decided to come back for more and Abi chased it round the truck
on the driveway and as I came round to retrieve her again, thinking it was a rabbit!
She pounced on it aaaaaaagggggghhhhhh! I'm sure I woke the whole 'hood up last night
and feel so bad about that with the scream I let out just as she landed   Shocked Shocked Shocked     Roll Eyes
OYvay!  what a rat she is!
I swear upon my father's grave; she is going to be the death of me,
not Pugsley or Bubba or any of
my other sweeties (may they rest in peace)

I think I passed out this morning from the fumes and now I'm trying to "freshen" up the house!
Anyhow, a great start to my days off fur sure; who has time to paint with this one around  Undecided Undecided Undecided

Aw, don't be too mad at Abi, I'm sure she thought she was protecting her home from the evil (if interesting smelling) interloper.  She just doesn't think ahead.  She's Abi why-look-before-I-leap McLachlan. Grin

Hey Lisa,

Abi is smelling pretty good these days.
I think the quick bath with Dawn and vinegar, followed by Mane
& Tail, the first nite and the subsequent bath with Dawn, peroxide and baking soda mix followed by Mane & Tail CondiTioner again really helped get rid of the la odour pepe la peu  LOL!

What did you use on her face?  Or did she not get hit in the face?  I used some water and vinegar on Piper's face the first day....that is the only thing that still has the smell on it.
