Kilo is the newest pug in rescue.  He looks like a sweetheart.  He could really use some support at the Pugoweens, which will all be dedicated to help getting him healthy!

Honestly, we are really getting slammed with the medically costly dogs these days.  I think our foster dogs are now averaging $1,000 to $1,500+ per dog--with some of them WAY over that mark in vet costs.  It's really worrisome.

Wow, that is worrisome.  Is this a trend being seen for lots of rescue groups lately or is Pugalug just having an unusual rash of sick dogs?

Welcome Kilo, I hope you start feeling better soon.

A bit of both, I think, Anna.  Pugalug has ALWAYS seen a higher number of costly/ill dogs.  It would be interesting to see if that's true of all rescues specializing in brachycephalics.  But we used to get in a fair number of dogs with minimal to no health issues--just needed spay/neuter, vaccinating and chipping.  We aren't seeing that nearly as much.  Increasingly we are seeing dogs who need a lot of vet care: Leila, Nikko, Winnie, Bruce, Emi, Jem, Dodger--now Milo and Kilo.  I think all rescues are seeing more dogs in bad health.  I think some of that is the economy--people can't afford vet care or get a dog cheap off the internet and then can't manage the issues.

But since we already see pretty high vet bills anyway, an increase in it is worrisome.  And I would say that in the last year, almost every dog we've had in has had significant issues.  We're going to start tracking vet costs on individual dogs and start posting it so people know that what we charge in adoption fees comes nowhere close for paying for the dogs care in rescue.

Dave is a perfect example.  He was young and perfectly healthy when he arrived but racked up over $1,500 in vet bills due to the complexity of his neuter.  I think posting the vet costs on individual dogs is a great idea Blanche.  People need to know that the adoption fees aren't about making money or breaking even for that matter.

Just read Kilo's foster update and he seems like the sweetest boy ever (except for my own, of course  Wink.  Imagine being so friendly and happy with all the medical challenges he has and the pain he must have been in.  Now, maybe I'll send him over to talk to my FIL.  LOL  But really, this is one seriously gorgeous fur-baby.

Yes he is .. I met him at the pugalug and he was just as sweet in person.  A little bit shy at first, but it didn't take him long to warm up!

I hope Kilo's diabetes checkup tomorrow is a positive one and that his bladder stones remain under control.
He sounds like a nice boy.

Here's his update.

He was our photo helper at Pug Claus.  He's really coming around and was much more friendly this time around with a big crowd around than he was at the Haloween Pugalug.
