It will be two years ago tomorrow that I had to put down my dachshund Willie. He was with me almost 16 years, through good and bad. You are still missed little man.

Laura, you and your Willie will be in my thoughts. Willie doesn't look like the traditional kind of dachshund that I think of, is there different kinds?

Willie doesn't look like the traditional kind of dachshund that I think of, is there different kinds? There are 6 that I am aware of. There is the smooth coat, which most people recognize. They are often red, but also black and tan is common. There is the wired hair, which has a bit of a terrier look to me, and Willie was a long hair. Each of these comes in standard and miniature and there are many coat colours that are acceptable. Willie was a standard, long hair, silver dapple, he was mostly black and tan but had silver / grey areas. His face always had grey so people thought he was old, when he was still a young guy. Willie was the anti-Maude basically, which is why I think I find her so strange sometimes. I was used to Willie and Maude seemed like a complete alien to me when I got her. He never liked toys (excpet his basketball - ironic) and Willie was never hyper, he was pretty low energy. He liked to walk but was also content to sit with you quietly from a very young age. Unlike Maude he hated other dogs (he was attacked by one when he was 9 months old and never really could be near them after that) and He loved people. He used to come with me to my photo studio in London and was great with kids. Through my photography connections Willie ended up being in many advertisements and a television commercial for a mall in London. He was really good in font of the camera (like Maude he learned to pose early). Unfortunately, my move to Toronto turned out to not be the best thing for him. I no longer could take him with me to work and he became less and less comfortable around new people as he aged. He starting nipping at strangers and at that time there was not a lot of information about training problem dogs and I inadvertently made it worse by avoiding people when I was with him. He never was good with other dogs and I wish I had known about Joan Weston's training methods at that time. Willie would have been a much happier dog if I did. In spite of his behavioural issues, he was great with me, the cats and people he knew and I loved him no matter what.

What a cutie! I have a soft spot for doxies even though I think they can be difficult dogs from time to time. My dad had a long haired standard red named Elsa who was delightful, but reckless in her bravery.
Willie, you were a handsome man.

Can you imagine how much love a little dog creates in us that we still ache over their loss years later? It is a gift the love they give us, even though it's so painful when their bodies leave us. Someone once said, "Thank you for choosing my heart to break". It is so worth it.
