I adopted Lola from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) 10+ years ago. I always think I've had her longer than I have because she was such a huge presence in my life. She was cute as a button and a nightmare behaviourally. We had her for months before we could touch her without being bitten. My husband picked her out as he wanted a second dog and wanted a small one. I wouldn't have picked a pom if my life depended on it. I considered them yappy, stupid and useless little dogs. But Lola taught me otherwise.

She was nice to my husband until she got in our doorway and from that moment on was a total hag to him and my son, but was my dog. She remained a dedicated straight male hater all her life.

As we began to sort out her issues and my responses to them, she began to show that not only was she not stupid, she was hands down one of the smartest dogs I'd ever had. I did agility with her and while she was a dead loss at a practice, put an audience in front of her and she shone.

We did tracking--over the objections of our instructor who didn't think much of poms either. She drove him nuts and lured him into the web that was Lola adoration.

Somewhere along the line, she got the nickname The Death Pom. I can't remember if I gave it to her or she acquired it from the internet in response to her tales. She was a fearsome predator--killing squirrels, mice and snakes in her life.

I let her go today after our many years together. She was 14 or 15 years old and had lost an eye in the last year--but it didn't stop her. I don't know why she started to fail, but she did and I knew that when she could no longer BE Lola, it was time to set her free.

Run free, my gorgeous girl. You got my heart in your little teeth, gave it a good shake and hung on for dear life.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Blanche.  While i was never fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to meet Lola (she was in seclusion when we picked up Jem), i've loved the stories and pics.  She was a very unique dog and both her life and your life were richer from having found each other.  Condolences and a candle in Cambridge for your Lola.

Oh Blanche, I'm so sorry to hear about Lola.  How difficult to let her go even thought it was her time to sail.

Our thoughts are with you.  A donation has been made to Pugalug in Lola's memory.

Run free, Lola. She was known around the world and all those people enjoyed the tales of Lola, especially the tracking stories. We will miss seeing you at the park, Lola. A candle is lit at our house. Blanche, you loved her and did the final act of love, a dignified end.

A heartbreaking loss for you Blanche but so very kind and selfless to let Lola go before she couldn't be some semblance of her Death Pom self. Condolences to your whole family but special thoughts for Theo. I think I remember you saying that Lola and Theo stuck together. A candle will be lit here for Lola and God help all those at the Rainbow Bridge. It will never be the same.

I am so sorry Blanche - Lola was such a presence and truly the cutest dog I have ever seen. My heart and thoughts are with you and I will light a candle for Lola. Run free fierce girl!

I remember last summer being at your place and when I went up the stairs Lola was sitting at the top staring at me. She looked so cute I just wanted to touch her but I heeded your warning and side stepped her - she gave me a look that said "good choice lady".

Blanche I am so sorry.  As soon as I saw the post it made me cry.  I never met her but had a such a soft spot for her probably due to my experiences with Tippy.  I never realize how much a troubled little dog can grab you, particulary when you see their potential coming through.  I know this will leave a big hole.  Lola was a very lucky little girl.
Our thoughts are with you all.

My first-hand memories of Lola were also seeing her at the top of the stairs and giving her a wide and respectful berth.  Her tracking tales are legend.  Your relationship with Lola was a true love story and I know her toothmarks on your heart will last forever.  Hugs.

Blanche we have a candle lit for Lola the infamous Death Pom.  I never met her but she is immortalized in the many stories we've all enjoyed about her and you relationship with her.  I'm sure that they have cleared the bridge for her crossing.  A sad day for your family and we send you our good thoughts.

So very sorry to hear of your loss of Lola. She was always both interesting and beguiling. Like Hilary and Laura I so wanted to touch her she always looked so cute.... but I never worked up the nerve.

Our thoughts are with you and your family.
