I ran out of treats for the H-man, and while shopping I came across a bag of green tripe sticks - 100% green tripe that has been dried and rolled.  I had read somewhere on this board that green tripe is so good for dogs, so I bought them and brought them home and the first one was met by Hogarth with what I can only describe as elation.  What I didn't notice at the time was a recommendation on the bag that they only be given to large and mid-size dogs - the bag didn't say why, but I assumed it was because they might pose a choking hazard for smaller dogs (correct me now if there's another reason).  So he got his green tripe stick under heavy supervision and when it started looking gooey I look it away from him and sliced it up into small bits which he was then fed by hand.  Which I might add was a tremendously selfless act on my part because that stuff smells VILE.

When I was back in Global Pet I mentioned to the guy that the green tripe was a success, but the sticks were kind of unwieldy, and he said that it also comes in cans.  Has anyone fed canned green tripe?  Does it count as a snack or a meal?  And has anyone had issues with green tripe sticks?  I'm assuming that they are to be regarded as an Occasional Treat.

I really can't cook my own green tripe.  It's too hot in my apt to turn the oven on for anything.  I'm living on President's Choice frozen entrees.  The pug of course gets meat and two veg, and the prime spot in front of the air conditioner  Cheesy

I have given it to my guys in the past - they loved it and believe me it smells every bit as bad as the wet stick did.... maybe worse.

Good old "gag me" tripe.  Yes, the canned I use is called Tripett and you can get beef and lamb and maybe venison--I forget.  You can also buy it raw frozen.  I don't feed it as a meal as it is a bit rich for my guys, so I put a tablespoon in with their dinner once a week--usually when they are getting an offal meal (I feed raw).

I do buy the sticks, but cut them into treat size pieces.  It takes my garden loppers to cut them however.

I feed frozen raw tripe (straight from the farm) defrosted and cubed (a labour of love, for sure!).  About twice or three times a month, I add it to a meat meal - 1/3 tripe, 2/3 other meat.   I think Larry serves the canned version - Tripett.
