Last night on our evening walk when coming into the house Bugsy jumped up on our front doorstep, but his back paws didn't quite make it and it seems like only one nail on one back foot did ... and he kinda half ripped the nail off (ouch!) He didn't even notice nor did it phase him at all, I noticed the blood on the kitchen floor. It was bleeding quite a bit .. we cleaned it up and managed to get the bleeding to stop and he seemed fine, but a couple of hours later he had managed to open it up again and it was bleeding quite a lot, so at 11PM last night off to the vet emergency we went with him. A couple of hours later we were relieved to find out it wasn't anything more serious than that but it did take them a bit to get the bleeding under control as well. He had half ripped off one nail and also has a small split between his toes. He was less than impressed with the cone he had to wear last night (to make sure he didn't chew at his foot) and is still a bit groggy, they gave him a painkiller last night as well. Luckily he's just taking it all in stride and even letting us pick him up and stuff (which he never does) .. I guess he knows it's better for his foot. No serious walking for a month for this boy though and he'll be visiting the regular vet on monday to change the bandaid and make sure it's progressing ok and not continually re-opening (so far no blood so I think he's good on that front!) Send him your healing thoughts, poor little puggy's foot must be sore today!!

Bloody nails--literally. they really can bleed like a bastard and it can be hard to make it stop--especially when they use the foot all the time.
Lots of good thoughts out to Bugsy. Heal fast, Bug-Man.
Cooper--don't bug your brother.

Our little Mookie tore a nail completely out while racing around inside the cottage a few weeks ago... We also didn't know anything was wrong till we saw the blood. We brought him to a vet in Parry Sound the next morning and she said it had been ripped clean off and would likely grow back. She prescribed him antibiotics to ward off any infection. We kept his paw bandaged for a couple days to keep him from licking it. I hope Bugsy heals up fast - I don't know how they mask that pain so well. If it were me, the whole neighbourhood would know! Mookie's nail is half grown already and its been 2 weeks.

He's been soaking up the cuddles and him and his brother just got some baby carrots ... so he's taking your advice Candace.
He doesn't seem much worse for the wear for it aside from he's walking a little more slowly today (last night he didn't even seem to notice it).
The amount of blood was a bit startling, but you're right blanche .. I remember that I did that to one of my toenails at one point and WOW it did bleed a lot too. And the neighbourhood would have heard me for sure if it was me!

Bugsy, Sasha and Winnie are hoping your paw is feeling even better today but they both told me to tell you not to get too well too fast. They think that a little limping Pug, especially with a big colourful bandage, is a magnet for special treats and cuddles.
