Foster Update - September 17, 2021

Alfie has settled in well, continues to heal and has become comfortable with his foster home. There has been mutual acceptance and the pugs are comfortable being with each other. There has been no food aggression. When it is time for treats, they all sit patiently waiting their turn. While he is doing very well with the resident pugs, Alfie's best buddy is a black pug puppy who lives in the building. When his owner brings him down my hallway, Alfie and his friend do zoomies, bitey face and play wrestle. Attached is a video of the gentle giant with his little friend.

Alfie's eye ulcer has almost healed. He will continue with the eye medication until he goes back for a final checkup at the end of the month. His allergy is still bothering him. The two main symptoms are an ear infection that we are treating with antibiotics and the filling up of his anal glands which need to be expressed every two weeks. He is getting a medicated foot bath to take care of the discoloration on the top of his paws (also on his neck). This is improving because his licking has stopped. It will take another month to see the results of the change to the hypoallergenic protein food.

Alfie is the last one out of bed in the morning. He certainly enjoys sleeping in! I take the resident pugs out first. When I get back I call Alfie and tell him it's time for breakfast. That gets him out of bed. After breakfast, I take him out for a walk where he continues to delight people he meets. When kids come up to ask to pet, Alfie is front and centre enjoying the attention of both kids and adults. Back home, he doesn’t like the sound of the sirens of the emergency vehicles that go by the apartment. When he first came, he would bark in alarm every time but he seems to be getting familiar with the sounds and barks only occasionally now. Another sign he is settling in.

INTRODUCTION - August 18, 2021

Alfie is a happy, good natured pug. He greets people with a wagging tail and welcoming paws. He loves children. When we were sitting in the shade at the local park, a group of camp kids sat beside us for their lunch. Alfie was soon doing zoomies around them stopping for pets and hugs.

Alfie had no difficulty settling in with the resident pugs. He waits his turn when the treats are being handed out. He came with a box full of toys but has settled on a small fuzzy tennis ball to chase. He is fine with other dogs on the street except if they start to bark. Then he stands his ground and barks back. He plays with the neighbour's pug puppy, being gentle and patient with him.

Generally the street noises don't bother him. However, he does react if there is a siren outside. He is starting to respond to me calming him down when he hears one.

Afie was surrendered to Pugalug because of ongoing allergy issues for most of his life. The allergies, in turn, caused Alfie to continually lick himself which created infections. Both his skin and ears reacted to the allergy.

Also, during the transition time from his former home to the foster home, Alfie developed a corneal ulcer in the left eye. For the eye, he is on several medications to reduce the ulcer. After a week, the vet scanned the eye. It was better but we still needed to continue the medications. He is very good about getting his eye medications 4 times a day. We go back in a week to recheck the eye.

His blood work came back normal. No flea or tick issues. The fecal tested negative for parasites. The vet also commented on how good he was when getting blood drawn, having nails clipped and anal glands expressed. As I say, he has a wonderful disposition.

He has difficulty dealing with the heat and humidity. He begins panting after only a half block from the house. At 12 kg, his weight is a factor in this. We are working on reducing his weight.

As for the allergy issue, he has switched to a chicken diet. After 2 weeks there has been no sign of licking or allergic reaction. We will continue to monitor his skin, inner ears and licking.

Alfie spends his time in his bed snoring away. Every once in a while he comes over for a pet - sits down in front of me with his big head near my shins. He enjoys the head scratching and either lies down at my feet or heads back to his bed. At night he has his spot in the big bed near the air conditioner.
